Effects of Snow and Remineralization Processes on Nutrient Distributions in Multi?Year Antarctic Landfast Sea Ice

چکیده
We elucidated the effects of snow and remineralization processes on nutrient distributions in multi-year landfast sea ice (fast ice) Lützow-Holm Bay, East Antarctica. Based sea-ice salinity, oxygen isotopic ratios, thin section analyses, we found that fast grew upward due to year-by-year accumulation snow. Compared seawater origin, concentrations shallow were low replacement by clean fresh In deeper origin (the lower half column), was dominated degradation organic matter. By comparison between first- muti-year ice, biological uptake relatively young older respectively, under physical process brine drainage.

Snow on Antarctic Sea Ice
Snow on Antarctic sea ice plays a complex and highly variable role in air-sea-ice interaction processes and the Earth’s climate system. Using data collected mostly during the past 10 years, this paper reviews the following topics: snow thickness and snow type and their geographical and seasonal variations; snow grain size, density, and salinity; frequency of occurrence of slush; thermal conduct...
متن کاملImproving Multiyear Sea Ice Concentration Estimates with Sea Ice Drift
Multiyear ice (MYI) concentration can be retrieved from passive or active microwave remote sensing observations. One of the algorithms that combines both observations is the Environmental Canada Ice Concentration Extractor (ECICE). However, factors such as ridging, snow wetness and metamorphism can cause significant changes in brightness temperature and backscatter, leading to misidentification...
متن کاملNutrient status of snow cover and sea ice in the southern Sea of Okhotsk
Samples of sea ice and snow cover on sea ice were collected with the icebreaker P/V Soya in early February 2007 in the southern Sea of Okhotsk in order to evaluate the amount of nutrients in the sea ice and snow. The concentration of nitrate + nitrite, phosphate and silicic acid in the samples was measured in conjunction with such physical parameters as temperature, salinity, oxygen isotopic ra...
متن کاملChemistry of Antarctic Snow and Ice
We have studied 1000 samples of snow and ice from East and West Antarctica (coastal as well as central areas). These samples cover different time periods ua to 30,900 y$ars+$.P+. 1% the-meltwaterl we have measured major ions (i.e. Na, NH4 , K , Ca , Mg , H , C1 , NO3 , and SO4 ) using stringent contamination free tehniques. A very close balance between anions and cations is observed, making it ...
متن کاملCoastal landfast sea ice decay and breakup in northern Alaska: Key processes and seasonal prediction
Seasonal break-up of landfast sea ice consists of movement and irreversible ice detachment in response to winds or oceanic forces in the late stages of ice decay. The break-up process of landfast sea ice in the Chukchi Sea at Barrow, Alaska was analyzed for the years 2000 through 2010, based on local observations of snow and ice conditions, weather records, image sequences obtained from cameras...
